Love Equals Love

Q. What led you to be a music mentor in the community?

A: I started hosting music programs at Carnegie Centre in 1984, two jams and a cabaret every week. That continued for 16 years. I continued to host other coffee houses for many years in different locations and began teaching community choirs in the late '90s.  I have taught numerous workshops in songwriting, group singing, and other aspects of music over the years.  I have also taught privately during all that time, in musical subjects including piano, guitar, mandolin, singing, and theory.  I think I started doing all of this because my father was a teacher...

Q. What powerful lessons have you learned through your work?

A: The strongest lesson I learned from all of this activity is that every human being has the right, and to some extent the responsibility, to create beauty, to bring out the creativity inside them; it's a major part of what we're here to do.

Q. What is the main thing you hope to leave with community members through your music mentorship?

A: In this context, I would like to leave people with the sense that writing a song is not (only) magic; that it's something you can set out to do using skills which can be acquired, much like learning to cook.  What you choose to cook is up to you, but if you have the basic skills you can at least start the process.
